We’re back to working with local councils, much like we did as COVID-19 marshals, but this time we’re actively cracking down on antisocial behaviour in city centres. Working alongside the local council in Peterborough, we’re keen to get started, making the general public feel safe in their own streets.
The main issue we’ll be tackling is street drinking in the Cathedral area of Peterborough city centre. Having been featured in local news, it’s an issue that MP Paul Bristow and the local police force are well aware of. With so much pressure on the police, we’re pleased to be working alongside them as trusted partners.
What is considered antisocial behaviour?
Antisocial behaviour can be anything that involves a group or individual targeting another group or individual – subjecting them to trouble, annoyance or abuse. It can also involve an individual or group targeting public spaces or buildings, or being loud, abusive and disorderly at any time of the day or night.
This can be distressing and worrisome for people just trying to ‘mind their own business’ or perhaps trying to get home safely after a night out socialising with friends. They need not be targeted specifically for an individual or group’s behaviour to be considered unreasonable, it’s about recognising that group as disturbing the peace.
Every council wants its residents and businesses to feel safe. We’re pleased that Peterborough has decided to take a proactive approach. City council leader, Wayne Fitzgerald, explained it as, ‘quite simply, we don’t want a tiny minority of people spoiling things for the vast majority.’ We couldn’t agree more!
What will Carter Security officers be doing?
We’ll be adopting a similar approach to that of our COVID-19 marshalling, primarily using verbal permissions to encourage antisocial behaviour to stop. Should that prove unsuccessful, we will be legally able to issue fines. This six-month trial hopes to bring harmony to the city centre, improving the area so that others can enjoy it. With the cathedral being such a beautiful part of the city, it’s such a shame that the behaviour of others has made it unappealing to many. We’re hoping to reverse this and bring a sense of safety back for the residents.
