COVID-19 Marshals are currently a vital cog in the wheel of the UK returning to 'normal' by the late summer. With the easing of lockdown rules now in place, ensuring a slow and steady return to normality is key. If the public chooses to ignore this guidance, we risk an increase in infections rates and the possibility of restrictions being tightened once more. After a year of staying away from loved ones, there's no doubt that it's a tough ask, but it's a necessary one and something that COVID-19 Marshals are trained in supporting.

One of the most important aspects of the role of a COVID-19 Marshal is the collaborative approach of working alongside the local council. Last year, the government allocated specific funding to local councils across the UK for the use of COVID-19 related compliance and enforcement activities. They were urged to consider using this funding for the deployment of COVID-19 Marshals to support this compliance.

COVID-19 marshals and security guards share many transferrable skills, so the step to support local councils with trained COVID-19 marshals felt like a logical one. Excellent communication with the public, professionalism and remote working all apply to both roles, with the main role of a marshal being to provide practical support to aid and encourage compliance, such as dedicated marshals in public areas. A highly collaborative approach is therefore required, with the local council letting us know exactly where they want our support, and when. Their knowledge of the local area is invaluable, and it allows us to do our job in the most effective way.

We're really pleased that this partnership has worked so well, and feel positive about making a difference in the reduction of the spread of coronavirus. In the coming months, as restrictions ease and guidance changes, it's imperative that we are up to date with all of the latest information, so we're able to communicate this clearly with members of the public and local business owners.

We'll continue to work alongside local councils whilst the role is still necessary and hope that our contribution ultimately allows the UK to return to normal -- with friends and families reunited once more.
