There’s no getting away from the news reporting on the current cost of living crisis and just how much prices are rising in the UK. The impact of higher food and energy costs is hitting everyone and it’s a very unsettling time for many families, couples, and individuals across the country. It’s also a very worrying time for business owners, who not only need to factor in the cost of living and potential wage increases for their trusted employees but also the now increased risk of crime to their business that the current economic climate could influence.

Last week The Independent was just one of many newspapers publishing articles such as this: “Cost of living crisis will lead to increase in youth violence, experts warn.’ In their article, they explain how ‘there’s a danger that food and hunger will be used to snare young people into gangs… as Britain faces the biggest drop in living standards since the 1950’s.’

The mirror also published a similar article, but this time looking at the parents and not the children as potential thieves. The article was titled, ‘Bill crisis will spark ‘crime spree’ as parents ‘steal to feed kids’, police boss warns’. The newspaper not only discusses the possibility of food being stolen but also of general theft as a way to keep up with rent and energy payments. It described how poverty can be a reason why people choose to do the wrong thing.
