A recent article came to light about a criminal posing as a security officer, who alarmingly tricked bank staff into handing over £150,000!

The Sun* reports, ‘The crook is thought to have shown fake ID before taking the boxes two at a time despite rules requiring them to be carried singly… He was thought to have had a getaway driver waiting round the corner in Brixton, South London. Santander staff got suspicious when he did not return to sign for the boxes, containing £25,000 each.

To us, this demonstrates the trust that’s put into security officers, and the incredible responsibilities they’re trusted with. To be able to walk into a bank and be treated as an authentic security officer is a testament to the hard work real security officers do every day – and night! Shockingly, this individual was able to convince the bank staff into handing over such large sums of money, being called – quite literally – daylight robbery!

The nature of this crime highlights to us the importance of hiring the right individuals, and it’s one of the reasons we never subcontract. The sensitive nature of our work and the trust that goes into it means we have to be diligent when it comes to recruiting the right people.

Security officers aren’t just trusted with money, they’re trusted with keys to businesses through keyholding services, they’re trusted with the safety of the public through door supervisor roles and they’re trusted with maintaining our reputation of excellence.

Recruitment is something we take so seriously, ensuring that every security officer holds a valid SIA license as a standard before we progress them to interview. We ensure that not only the correct qualifications are in place, but that they’re the right type of person as well. Trust is such an important factor, as is communication. This is before we look at the logistics of the role, and whether that candidate can accommodate flexible working, shift patterns and work well both individually and as part of a team.

The role of a security officer is such a diverse one, but there’s one theme that runs thrue throughout every aspect of a career in security, and that’s trust!
