The role of a security guard is to reduce the risk of crime, whether that’s at business premises or – as with personal security – against an individual or individuals. As part of their extensive training, security guards are excellent at remaining calm and professional, particularly when faced with situations involving anti-social or even explosive behaviour. Security officers are not there to judge, simply to maintain the order of a situation should they be required to and as such, they are viewed as fair and trustworthy professionals. It’s for this reason that they can often make reliable witnesses in court.
There’s a particularly high profile defamation trial taking part in the USA at the moment, and that’s the case between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard. Simply put, Johnny Depp is suing Amber Heard for defamation because of an op-ed she published in the Washington Post in 2018. This article implies that Depp physically abused her, which he denies, and the back and forth between themselves and their lawyers have been published all over the internet.
A key witness has been Travis McGivern, Johnny Depp’s security guard, who has testified that he was forced to intervene when Depp and Heard’s arguments ever became physical. He has made several statements relating to Heard’s violent behaviour toward Depp and maintains that Depp was never violent in return. The public opinion seems to be overwhelmingly in Depp’s favour, with witnesses such as his security officer cited time and time again as a reliable source.
At Carter Security, we’re exceptionally proud of the work that our SIA licensed security officers do in protecting the businesses of our clients. We know they’re professional and trustworthy individuals. We support them further by providing body cameras as standard, knowing that should they be witness to a crime that footage would support their statements – helping justice to be served to the criminals in question.
The trial between Depp and Heard is something on our radar because of the concierge service we provide, meaning our security officers would have a similar role to that of Depp’s security personnel. Should any of our security officers find themselves witnesses in a trial, they would have our full support in testifying.
