Training is something we take very serious at CSS Ltd. So seriously in fact that we have our own purpose built training facility!
But what makes for 'good' training? And how can we ensure our security officers are at the top of their game? We believe there are 5 key steps to ensuring a quality training program and try to implement every step whenever we can.
1. Planning
It's hugely important to plan training beforehand. If you plan, you can make sure that the right people will be attending, that the training is relevant, and that the training is valuable.
- Perhaps you'll need to make sure that new legislation is incorporated?
- Or perhaps we would have taken on a new client that needs specific training to ensure our security officers are prepared?
- Maybe training needs to take place before a certain date?
No matter what the reason, it's important to plan ahead so everyone attending can put it in their diary, and so you as a trainer can be prepared.
2. Budget
Whether it's investing in new equipment that staff need to be trained on how to use or budgeting for refreshments on the day, everything needs to make business sense. Qualifications cost money, and if your business is supplying the training and paying for the exam, it's important that everyone is crystal clear on what is expected of them to ensure they pass confidently.
3. Train
On the day itself, make sure you have a clear timetable for the day. It's also important to think about how different people learn. Whilst a corporate powerpoint might cover the fundamentals, it might be more valuable to do role plays and create realistic simulations. Discussion based exercises might be a great way to bring the team together but bear in mind that some people aren't comfortable talking in front of a room of people, and that's okay.
4. Discuss lessons learned
Whether there is a feedback form to fill out at the end of the training session, or an online questionnaire sent out a few days later, it's important to find out if your training has been effective. Maybe it was a huge success, in which case you have a great backbone for training sessions in the future. Or perhaps there are a few lessons to be learned to improve for next time.
5. Repeat!
Training is ongoing, and this is something at CSS Ltd we take very seriously. We want our security guards to feel supported in their roles and have the opportunity to progress in their careers should they want to. Our purpose-built training facility allows us to book regular training sessions with our team to ensure we maintain our reputation for excellence within the security sector.
