This week it's been upsetting to see not one, not two, but three accounts of security officers being attacked during their shifts. Unfortunately, facing abuse is a known risk of the job, but that doesn't excuse aggressive behaviour towards security guards, and it's always something taken very seriously. In the below examples reported in the news this week, most attacks were a result of the perpetrator trying to steal, and the security officer on duty simply doing their role. Shoplifting is clearly against the law, and getting caught in the act was enough to drive these criminals to violence.

Shoplifting in Primark

On Tuesday 18th June, two women stole £184 worth of merchandise and were chased by security officers when they realised they'd been spotted. Before dropping the stolen goods, they punched the Primark security guard and then ran away. Although the goods were then returned, the police are looking for information to be able to identify the two women.

Some people are well known as shoplifters in their local community, and as such staff will often keep an extra close eye on someone who has been known to try and steal goods in the past. In Dublin this week, a young girl known to be a previous shoplifter, attacked a security officer after staff alerted him to her thieving actions. Investigations are ongoing, and the security guard was left bleeding after her scratching, kicking and punching him.

How do Carter Solutions and Services Limited security guards handle potential abuse?

The most important way that we keep our security officers safe from potential violence is through training. With de-escalation training, we can -- more often than not -- diffuse a situation before it becomes violent. If someone does react with aggression, our security officers are highly trained to know what physical contact can keep them safe, and they know how and when to contact the local authorities.

We were saddened to see the number of attacks on security officers in the news this week, and we would encourage anyone who may have any information to contact the relevant police department. Security offices are there to help both members of the public and the company they're on duty for, and as such should always be treated with courtesy and respect.
