Many areas of the UK experienced quite the storm this week, with thunder, lightning, and an impressive amount of rainfall. Storms like these can have a negative impact on your security, detailed below.
Thunder can mask breaking and entering
The smashing of windows, kicking of doors, and jumping over gates can all be masked by the clap of thunder. If your business is situated in a residential area, this could make your business a target – knowing the local residents wouldn’t suspect banging and crashing to be anything other than the storm. The heavy rainfall also makes foot traffic much lighter, meaning it’s much less likely that a passer-by would see trespassing or any other crimes.
CCTV footage will also be compromised in stormy weather. Rather ironically, CCTV is always best in daylight, with dry conditions, yet this is the least likely time for an opportunistic criminal to take their chance! In poorer weather conditions, CCTV struggles to gain clear footage, and whilst thermal imagery can be a better option, there’s little than can be done to make a criminal with a hood and probably rain jacket easily identifiable.
Finally, there’s the damage that a storm can leave behind. Strong winds and flooding all have the potential to damage property, whether that’s your perimeter fencing or even smashing windows. This makes it easier for criminals to gain entry without leaving much of a trace behind. After a storm, it’s always a good idea to do a patrol around your business, ensuring that fallen debris from trees is cleared away and repairing any damage as quickly as you’re able.
