This week we were tagged in the below post, celebrating the incredible work of Ian and Graeme of Carter Security. Both served in the military and have chosen a career in Security. We’re proud to have them as part of the team!

Three similarities between the military and the security industry

Many ex-military individuals choose security following their service, and we suspect it’s because of the many transferable skills to both careers, detailed below.

  1. Respect and accountability

A role in security required high levels of respect – for both the public and the client, and a strong sense of accountability when on shift, particularly with lone working. The same applies to roles within the Armed Forces, with respect and accountability being key skills.

  1. Discipline and professionalism throughout difficult circumstances

Whilst the level of risk with military individuals on tour and security officers on shift does vary considerably, both roles could involve difficult circumstances, including knowing how to manage and disperse anti-social behaviour. Having the discipline to remain calm and act quickly and professionally, within the confines of the law, is a particular skill attributed to both professions.

  1. A career that makes a difference

Finally, there’s the nature of the career itself. Both a career in the forces and a career within security involve keeping people safe, whether that’s fighting for your country or keeping the peace on the streets. Many military men are put on guard duty when on base, a similar role to manned guarding and mobile patrols in the security industry.

There are also instances where the military is deployed alongside security officers at large-scale events where there could be antisocial behaviour, and the two can work side by side to achieve the same goal.
