Latest statistics have shown that two-thirds of people in the UK have experienced some form of mental health issue. It’s a topic that’s always hitting the headlines and a serious medical problem when left untreated. Though mental health covers a wide range of illnesses, including depression and anxiety, there are a number of steps you can take to try and improve it.
Outdoor working
Mental health charities, including Mind, share how being outdoors can positively impact mental health.
Mind writes on their website, ‘Spending time in nature has been found to help with mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. For example, research into ecotherapy (a type of formal treatment which involves doing activities outside in nature) has shown it can help with mild to moderate depression. This might be due to combining regular physical activity and social contact with being outside in nature.
Being outside in natural light can be helpful if you experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that affects people during particular seasons or times of the year. And people tell us that getting into nature has helped them with many other types of mental health problems.’
This means that an outdoor role, such as a security officer, can be beneficial to mental health, especially when the sun is shining during the summer months when natural light is at its brightest!
Job satisfaction
Job satisfaction and feeling valued and trusted are other ways in which a career in the security industry can be beneficial to someone’s mental health. We’re incredibly proud of the work that our SIA licensed security officers do, and they’re trusted with the security of our clients, knowing that they’ll do an incredible job on every shift.
Circumstances where a security officer needs to step to deescalate an anti-social behavioural situation or implement the ‘Ask for Angela’ scheme also result in a high level of job satisfaction and therefore improved mental health. This is because that person has made an incredible contribution to keeping everyone safe and secure whilst on their shift.
