The weather is beautiful at the moment, and that makes it easy to take your eye off the ball when it comes to the security of your business premises and the security of your employees. We've put together 5 tips to help keep you safe during the warmer months.
1.Close your doors and windows
Opening the windows to let in a breeze and listen to the birds singing is a great way to brighten any day. What's important is that you remember to close and lock any windows you might have had open during the day when you close up for the day. It doesn't matter if it's the very top floor, and it doesn't matter if it's just a small window - thieves are opportunistic and can and will force entry if they see a chink in the armour.
The same goes for any doors you might have opened that you wouldn't have normally, had the weather been cooler. Don't be afraid to educate your staff on the importance of closing and locking doors and windows, especially if they're typically the last people there.
2.Cut back shrubs in outside spaces
Whilst it's unlikely that gardening is going to be at the top of your list, it's important to stay on top of pruning for more than just aesthetic reasons. Overgrown shrubs can create a cover for burglars, and trees with low hanging branches could be the perfect way for someone to gain entry to top floors. Cutting them back reduces the risk of greenery being used to break and enter.
3.Check on your exterior lights and alarms
The last thing a criminal wants is to be seen. Just because the evenings are lighter for longer shouldn't mean that you need not replace the bulbs in the exterior lights. Exterior lights are a great, cost-effective way to deter burglars from your business premises. It's also good to get into the habit of regularly checking on your alarm systems to make sure they work properly.
4.Be careful what you put on social media and newsletters
Everyone is online nowadays, and that means thieves are too. If you advertise on social media that your offices are closing over the summer, or if you put in a company newsletter about earlier closing times, for example, then you might as well be inviting thieves to your place of work -- letting them know no-one will be around to disturb them!
By all means, let your clients know if your offices are closing, but perhaps consider doing so via a phone call. It's much more personal, and a much safer way to inform only those on a 'need-to-know' basis.
5.CCTV and a professional security service
