This morning presenters Ruth and Eamonn Holmes recently interviewed ex-burglar Michael Fraser, asking for his tips on how to protect your home. As a security provider, we found it incredibly interesting to see it from a completely opposite point of view! Whilst we focus on corporate security for much larger premises' than a house, much of the advice given by Michael Fraser can be used at your offices too.

1. Be sensible and look at your own property for if you forget your keys
It's Monday morning, you're stood outside the office, and you realise you've left your keys at home. Nightmare! Rather than making the tedious trip back home, you decide to search your property for an opportunity to break in, rather that than spend unnecessary time travelling in rush hour traffic, right? What you're actually doing is looking for areas of weakness in your security systems, and that's exactly what a burglar will be doing. This is, therefore, a worthwhile activity to do when it comes to assessing your security -- we can help you do this and offer our expert advice.
2. The more you do, the more likely a burglar is to move on
Prevention is so much better when it comes to security! If you show you're proactive, then a burglar will move on as the risk of them being caught is heightened. The best security measure is arguably manned guarding and mobile patrols, as having trained professionals on-site mean being able to actively combat crime there and then.
3. Smart cameras on your business premises
Smart cameras are growing in popularity in the domestic market, but there's no reason why these can be used in corporate settings. Costing approximately £200 for a decent model, these alert the business owner to any movement outside the property, and can even allow you to talk to the trespasser.
4. Utilise all of your locks
If you have both a cylinder lock and a deadlock, be sure to use them both. A burglar will be able to see if both locks are in use, and if they're not, you're simply making his/her job a little easier! If you have them, use them.
5. Avoid 'beware of the dog' signs
Contrary to popular belief, a 'beware of the dog' sign on your property actually shows that there isn't an internal alarm system. This means that anywhere the dog can go, the burglar can go. Burglars will also know the majority of domestic/office dogs are friendly, and a cheeky treat will make your fierce guard dog a friendly companion for anyone breaking and entering!
6. Have a cage over your letterbox
Internal cages over your letterbox prevent what is known as 'letterbox finishing'. This is when a burglar uses a long device to steal keys from the hallway or reception area. This might even include car keys to company vehicles left at the property overnight.
7. Set timers to turn on a lamp, or a radio
Just because 'normal' working hours are 9am-5pm, that doesn't mean the office is guaranteed to be empty. After all, there's no reason for a burglar to believe that the property is empty unless of course the building is shrouded in darkness inside and out. A simple way to suggest that someone is in the building working late is to set timers on lamps or radios. As long as the plug, with the timer, is hidden from view, the risk of someone potentially being inside could easily be enough to cause a burglar to move on.
8. Don't hang a calendar, as this shows when you'll be out of the office
Calendars are great, but they're also a great giveaway to show when the office will be empty. They also demonstrate that you're not security conscious, as you're forgetting that burglar have the ability to read! Moving calendars so they're out of view of the windows is a quick and easy way to increase your security.
