There are a number of things you can do to be proactive with the security of your business. We've broken them down into 4 key categories to help you become 'security-savvy'!

1.Educate your staff

The first step in securing your business premises is to educate your staff. They need to be aware of potential threats, how they can help to prevent them, and how to report them. They will also need to understand their individual roles of keeping the business secure which should include everything, including --

  • The importance of valid ID .
  • The importance of setting and disabling and updating alarm codes and systems.
  • The importance of keeping the internal and external of the building tidy -- for the purpose of not obstructing CCTV, not setting off alarms unnecessarily and not giving burglars opportunities of breaking and entering.

2.Keeping the building safe internally

There are a number of simple steps you can take to make your business safe internally. These include

  • Always locking windows at the end of the day.
  • Always closing internal doors -- ensuring they're shut firmly so there is no risk of them blowing open and setting off internal alarms.
  • Setting internal alarms, checking that they work and ensuring that only authorised personnel have access codes.
  • Keeping all calendars out of sight of windows, to ensure burglars can't plan when they know the office will be empty.

3.Keeping the business safe online

  • Out of office replies should be adapted to read differently to internal employees and external contacts. This is so information about annual leave and absences don't fall into the wrong hands. It should always appear from an outsider point of view that someone will always be available.
  • Social media is a great tool for local businesses to build and maintain relationships. As it's a public platform, it's important to avoid sharing 'away' days or holidays in advance, as this effectively advertises when the building will be empty.
  • Having a robust cybersecurity system is hugely important to avoid things like phishing scams and the wrong information falling into the wrong hands.

4.Keeping the building safe externally

  • Keep the outside of the building clear and tidy, ensuring there aren't any low hanging branches that could provide access to windows, and that there aren't ladders, large bins or other such things lying around, or trees and shrubs blocking your CCTV.
  • CCTV is often the first step in maintaining safety outside. However, whilst this is seen as a deterrent, it's easy for burglars to bypass CCTV or hide their identity so it should never exclusively be used as a preventative security measure.
  • Manned Guarding and Mobile Response services are the most effective deterrent to crime, and the most effective method of controlling an incident should something happen at your business. Our highly-trained security officers can be on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep your business safe from crime.
